French Gold & Enamel Plique-a-Jour Hoop Earrings

These vintage 1960's red, blue and green enamel hoops set in 18K yellow gold were made in France. These are a wonderfully modern example of the plique-a-jour technique. (Most jewelry in this style is heavily ornate.) The natural movement of the earrings also continually catches light, playing off the colors of the enamel inlay. Perhaps this is where the universal Wi-Fi symbol was derived?

Plique-à-jour (French for "braid letting in daylight") is a vitreous technique used in furniture, accessory and jewelry design in which enamel is applied to cells created with gold or silver wire, similar to cloisonné, but with no backing, so that light shines through, creating an incandescent effect. The resulting objets are said to resemble miniature versions of stained glass. It is technically extremely challenging, taking weeks if not months per piece. In Japan the technique is known as shotai-jippo.

The piece is in excellent condition, showing no signs of wear with pierced hinge backings. It maintains a "750" marking on its 22 x 10 x 22 mm 18K yellow gold metal.
