R. DeRosa, or Ralph DeRosa, was a talented artisan, craftsman, and jeweler from sunny and verdurous Naples, Italy. Despite the inevitable socioeconomic hardships, DeRosa felt he had more awaiting him in the "Land of Opportunities" and fearlessly set off to establish The R. DeRosa Jewelry Company in New York City.
Each piece began as highly detailed hand painted illustrations to be crafted into even more ornate jewelry pieces. Sometimes, the illustrations were accompanied by complex handwritten instructions on how each piece of jewelry was to be delicately crafted step-by-step. Both the original illustrations and instructions are arguably as highly coveted as the jewelry pieces themselves.
The design of an R. DeRosa piece can only be described as a three dimensional and truly lifelike floral sculpture. Thistle, lavender, and violets alike are constructed out of elaborate enamel and rhinestones. The first R. DeRosa jewelry collection was dedicated to Venetian lace, proving the company's dedication to extravagant and precious designs. The company also manufactured at times for Elsa Schiaparelli.
The R. DeRosa Jewelry Company produced complex and heavy costume jewelry from 1934 until approximately six years after Ralph's death. During those six years, his daughter Vera replaced him as the lead designer and president until the company's closing in 1955. Today, the "R. DeRosa" hallmark is highly sought after, but not easy to find.BACK TO SHOP
