Monete Collection Greco-Roman Coin Earrings

Part of Bulgari’s iconic Monete collection, these historic coin earrings are a style conceived by Nicola Bulgari, the founder’s great-grandson, in 1966. The collection features an array of coins from ancient Greece to early twentieth century America, contrasting contemporary designs with the history of ancient coins. The use of ancient currency speaks to Bulgari’s heritage and the jeweler’s experimentation with materials.

The Monete Collection was a frequently worn favorite of some of society’s most admired fashionistas, from Grace Kelly to Elizabeth Taylor. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor famously traveled to Rome to shoot Cleopatra in 1963, presenting the film’s director and his wife with a Bulgari cigarette case bedecked in ancient Roman coins, engraved, “To Our Favorite Producer and Wife / Lest we forget the glamour of it all / All Love / Elizabeth & Rich.”

Made in Italy, these 18K yellow gold contemporary earrings feature 2.32 ctw of gemstones, with 1.36 ctw of oval cabochon rubies (approximately 0.17 ct each) and 0.96 ctw of diamonds (0.04 ct each; color: F-G; clarity: VVS2-VS1).

These 4.1 x 2.4 cm earrings feature a clip backing and weigh 55.76 g. They are in very good condition with minor scratching on the reverse side. Markings include "Bvlgari", "Macedonia", "Alexander The Great 336-323 BC", and "750" with an additional hallmark.
